Embrace simplicity

Jodi, Author of Practising Simplicity and friend of FEMMZE, shares how to practise simplicity during your period.

One of the most beautiful parts of living simply is honouring the seasons of your cycle. Once I got to know my cycle, I understood myself in a whole new way and really changed the way I live, create and rest throughout the month.

There is so much to know about our "cyclical seasons". I tend to plan by life around the winter of menstruation (slow, restful, introverted), the spring of pre-ovulation (my most productive and creative time), the summer of post-ovulation (where I have the energy to work, play and give to others) and the autumn of pre-menstruation (I’m coming down from the summer high and am starting to move slower and need more rest).

If you want to be more mindful of resting during menstruation so you’ve got more energy throughout your next cycle, embrace these suggestions:

STOCK YOUR FREEZER

If you can squirrel away a few ready-made meals so you can avoid cooking for the first few nights of your cycle, you’ll be eating well without dedicating an hour of your evening to the kitchen.

GO TO BED EARLY

We all pine for a sleep-in but going to bed early is a practical way to embrace deep, nourishing rest. Get in your comfiest PJs, warm your core with a hot water bottle, drink your favourite tea and read a book.

CANCEL SOCIAL ENGAGEMENTS

This can be tricky, but by limiting your outings and commitments when you’re bleeding, you’ll be taking big steps towards listening to your body and restoring your energy for the weeks ahead.
